Highlights
made of gold & silver
The Museum of Franconia's urban history collection houses objects from the 8th century to the present day.
The Highlights – objects made of gold and other precious metals housed at the Museum für Franken – showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of Franconia’s goldsmiths and silversmiths. Numerous acquisitions were possible thanks to generous donations, for example the silver cup from the middle of the 18th century was donated by the Freunde Mainfränkischer Kunst und Geschichte e. V. (Association of Friends of Main-Franconian Art and History). Unfortunately, the metal objects also suffered great losses due to the destruction of the Second World War.
All previous directors of the museum have, with good reason, cultivated the acquisition of objects of gold and silversmithing art in Franconia and far beyond.
The high-quality metalwork ranges from early history, for example the magnificent disk brooch from the 2nd century, to the 19th century. It was often not just the metal used that gave an object its significance, but also the special decoration, for example the extremely decorative brass basin bowl. Beyond tableware, silver and other metals were of course also used artistically time and time again.
