Objects with history(ies)

True treasures lie dormant in the exhibition rooms and depots of our museum. However, it is not only the objects themselves that are valuable, but also the stories they tell. These books in German include amusing, bizarre and poignant stories  –  tales that bring art and history to life. Each volume presents 50 works of art from the Museum für Franken and tells of the patrons, owners or creators of the artworks, as well as the trials and tribulations that befell them on their way to the Museum für Franken.

In Volume 1, "Von Riemenschneiders Ratstisch bis zum markgräflichen ‚Thron‘ von Ansbach: Möbel mit Geschichte(n)" – "From Riemenschneider's Council Table to the Margrave's 'Throne' of Ansbach: Furniture with History(s)", the reader encounters, for example, the 'Throne' of the last Margrave of Ansbach, a reading table in a raisin bomer or the table top in which Tilman Riemenschneider immortalized the self-confidence of the Würzburg Council.

Volume 2, "Halbiertes Jakobusbild und Schneewittchens Cousinen: Gemälde mit Geschichte(n)" – "The halved image of St. James and Snow White's cousins: paintings with story(s)", is dedicated to paintings. Here, the reader encounters Snow White or at least the portrait of her cousins, a thicket of leaves in a winter landscape, a split image of St. James and artist "selfies" between Albrecht Dürer and James Dean.

Volume 3 "Von Echters Altarkreuz zu Huttens Chocolatière: Glanzstücke mit Geschichte(n)" – "From Echter's Altar Cross to Hutten's Chocolatière: Highlights with History(s)" presents particularly exquisite pieces. Readers encounter the richly decorated chocolatière of a prince-bishop, a thrifty pair of sugar tongs and a very unusual tribute to a horse. They learn about drinking songs of the miller's guild, buried treasures and also that craftsmanship does not always have a golden bottom.

The stories surrounding the works of art are sometimes bizarre, sometimes funny, but always exciting and informative. They tell of wealth, splendor and self-confidence or of misfortune, intrigue and artistic failure. The photos, taken from a new perspective, allow the high-quality and multifaceted collection of the Museum für Franken to be viewed like a kaleidoscope: colorful, diverse and entertaining.

The books are available for 19.00 euros at the Museum für Franken or at https://www.na-verlag.de/.
