The new concept for the Museum für Franken picks up speed
Minister of Art Blume: "More experience, more Franconia, more appeal - a cultural beacon far beyond Bavaria"

The Museum für Franken is set to reopen in the early 2030s. Information on the current status was provided on 13 May at the event "Museum für Franken: Good prospects!", at which Dr. Richard Loibl, Director of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte (HdBG) and the Museum für Franken, provided insights into the new concept.

Following the general renovation of Marienberg Fortress, the museum will move into the core castle with a new permanent exhibition. The other areas are intended for special exhibitions, visitor infrastructure, storage and administration. The aim is to create a modern, barrier-free and visitor-oriented museum that conveys history in an immersive and exciting way. At the same time, Marienberg Fortress can develop into a lively place for Würzburg's urban society.

The complete renovation of the fortress is one of the largest cultural projects of the Free State of Bavaria. Bavaria's Minister of Art Markus Blume emphasized: "More experience, more Franconia, more appeal: Marienberg Fortress is taking off again with the House of Bavarian History! The Museum of Franconia is a key cultural policy project in northern Bavaria. With over 300 million euros, the Free State of Bavaria is investing heavily in a place with a unique history and enormous potential for the future. A modern permanent exhibition is being created in the core castle that tells the story of Franconia in a new, lively and immersive way. At the same time, Marienberg Fortress will become a lively meeting place for Würzburg's urban society - with a high quality of stay, gastronomy and space for events, conferences and a variety of cultural formats. With the new Museum für Franken, we are creating a cultural beacon with appeal far beyond Bavaria."

The redesign of the museum is currently in full swing. As part of the restructuring, Dr. Richard Loibl took over the management of the Museum für Franken in October 2025. Since then, he and experienced employees from the HdBG have been working with the team in Würzburg on the content concept for the exhibition and its organizational implementation in the overall project.

Blume was convinced: "The best museum minds for Franconia! The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte knows how to tell history in a modern, emotional and successful way. Dr. Loibl and his team also have enormous experience in large-scale projects, exhibitions and modern museum communication. This expertise is worth its weight in gold for the new concept of the Museum für Franken."

Following the presentation, Minister of State Markus Blume spoke with representatives from the worlds of culture and politics in a panel discussion moderated by Veronika Genslein, Deputy Director of the Museum für Franken. The topics: Modern museum work - from audience orientation and new perspectives to a stronger focus on Franconia as a whole.
Markus Blume was joined by Thomas Schiebel, Deputy District President of Lower Franconia, Dr. Constanze Itzel, Director of the House of European History in Brussels, Prof. Dr. Günter Dippold, District Conservator of Upper Franconia, Benedikt Stegmayer, Cultural Officer of the City of Würzburg and Prof. Dr. Matthias Stickler, Chairman of the Friends of Main-Franconian Art and History e.V., discussed the future prospects of the Museum für Franken.
