When Franconia
became Franconian
Special exhibition from March 21 to September 15, 2021
Special exhibition in the Knauf Museum Iphofen with exhibition island in the Museum für Franken.
The north of Bavaria is inhabited by the Franconians, a people who are very different from the population of Old Bavaria. This is due to the fact that the Franks have different roots: Their ancestors - Germanic tribesmen from the Franks - arrived in the land on the Main from the Middle Rhine region from the early 6th century AD.
In a time of almost no writing, only archaeology can bear witness to these "first Franks" in the Main region. After the victory over the Alamanni in 496 AD and the Thuringians in 531 AD, the Frankish kings from the Merovingian dynasty began to colonize what is now Franconia.
Exhibition island on the early fortress of Marienberg
The Museum für Franken is taking part in the exhibition with the exhibition island on the early fortress of Marienberg. This can be viewed in the museum's Schönbornhalle. Visitors can literally get a picture of Würzburg in the Merovingian period. A particular attraction of the exhibition is that the Franconian dukes and St. Kilian can be found here in their historical places of activity. And what do the recently discovered skeletons in the castle courtyard tell us? Their discovery sheds new light on the old legends surrounding Kilian, the dukes and the Marienberg!
