The big family exhibition

December 17, 2021 until May 01, 2023

We invite you! Over 900 m² of exhibition space, more than 240 original objects and many hands-on stations bring the Middle Ages to life!

The journey begins in the countryside, where simple houses, hard work and the course of the seasons determined life. It continues into the town to the marketplace, where social life is characterized by the hustle and bustle of trade. Here you can find out which goods are particularly valuable and how to spot a cheat.

Then the path gets rocky, because it's up to the castle! Castle construction is in full swing and can use skilled craftsmen and women to lend a hand. The medieval castle is home to damsels and knights. Here, young knights and damsels are trained for their future tasks.

While you can listen to legendary stories in the fairytale tower, a cozy seating area next door invites you to immerse yourself in the past with short multimedia videos. Artistic delights also await in the "Minne and Music" area, where visitors can play the magic harp themselves. In collaboration with instrument maker Andreas Spindler and his Capella Antiqua Bambergensis, historical instruments bring the sound of the Middle Ages to life.

If you follow the path up to the last exhibition room, you will have climbed the pyramid of estates from the rural population to the craft guilds and the urban bourgeoisie to the nobility and clergy. This raises the question: What is so special about a prince-bishop? What made people tick in the Middle Ages and how do you save your soul?

Immerse yourself and

Each chapter of the exhibition presents original objects and exciting information. In addition to highlights from the collection of the Museum für Franken, loans from Franconia and beyond are on display. In cooperation with the Spessart Archaeological Project, special exhibits are placed in the context of current research.

The exhibition areas also encourage visitors to become active themselves. Ground traces lead to tactile stations, audio experiences invite visitors to listen and numerous areas are waiting to be discovered through play. Last but not least, the large knights' castles sponsored by PLAYMOBIL/ Horst Brandstätter Group will make children's hearts beat faster. All visitors can choose their own approach and immerse themselves in the "journey through time" with all their senses. The show is enriched and complemented by stations from the interactive traveling exhibition "Around the Castle" by the district of Lower Franconia.

Around the family exhibition, the Museum für Franken organizes a colourful programme of events, concerts, workshops and guided tours to make a trip to Marienberg Fortress a special experience!
