Lower Franconia trades
June 30 to October 22, 2023
Trade and consumption are part of our everyday lives. We shop in supermarkets and at market stalls, choose a snack from a vending machine, stroll through city center stores or store online.
The traveling exhibition "Gekauft! Unterfranken handelt" therefore has a lot to tell: From enterprising cloth merchants in the Middle Ages to traveling bakers in mobile vendors, from Roman luxury imports to delicious colonial goods, from the raftsmen on the Main to the market women with their range of herbs, cabbage and turnips from Franconian gardens.
Lower Franconia has a lot to offer by nature: fertile soils, sun-drenched vineyards, healthy healing springs and valuable raw materials. The region is also rich in clever minds and resourceful business people. Many a product "Made in Lower Franconia" is successful on the world market - and even in space! - successful. Lower Franconia also sets the tone musically: the loudest organ in the world comes from the Rhön and many bands are involved in pop culture.
And how do the goods get to us - the customers? The Main has always played an important role here. Freight transport by rail, which has been growing since the 19th century, was eventually overtaken by motorized freight transport by road. Today, digitalization is opening up new markets and will continue to offer us new product formats in the future with apps and streaming services.
And what else do we learn? That responsible and sustainable treatment of our environment is also part of consuming with pleasure. To protect the environment, the exhibition is therefore made from materials that come from renewable raw materials and can be recycled. In this way, it helps to ensure that Lower Franconia is environmentally friendly.
Join in
and try it out!
The exhibition appeals to all the senses and offers a wide range of opportunities to join in and try things out: Visitors of all ages can listen to the rattling of the "Meekuh", sniff spices from the Mainbogen or declare their shopping type. If they then use the specially compiled playlist with songs from Lower Franconia, the exhibition unfolds its effect beyond the museum walls when all the senses are engaged. In addition to guided tours for school classes and groups, there is also an accompanying program for young and old.
